Traveling around, having a lot friends from all over the world and running this blog for a while… I’ve noticed that there are many common misbelief about italian food and cuisine.
For sure Italian food is beloved all around the word, but there are many misbelief and misconceptions about Italian food.
These are some of the most common misbelief about Italian food.
It is believed that Italian cooking needs peculiar skills and abilities: it’s a false statement and (as I am a marketing officer) I can prove it by statistics. Italian population counts more or less 40 million people, all of us cook and eat Italian food at least twice a day. If cooking Italian food would have been so difficult we should have been all rocket scientist or starving to death, or extinct as a Dodo.
There are many ways to save money with Italian food. The matter is that ready-made food is expensive, but if you prepare homemade dishes, choosing fresh and proper ingredients, you can save a lot of money. For the same statistical reasons I gave you before, 40 million of Italians are not 40 milion of billionaires, but still cooking and eating Italian food, daily.
Indeed, a lot of Italian traditional recipes are definitely time spending, but there are many recipes that don’t need too much time to be prepared. We Italians spend a lot of time cooking, but nowadays modernity and modern- always-running-life-style has reached even Italy! To get good results, there are many “shortcuts”, such as using a pressure cooker, parboiled rice, express polenta flour… A good idea is preparing some extra portion and freezing and storing for later.
I bet any Italian travelling in the USA has wondered about who freaking is Alfredo. There are many versions of this legendary character of the Italian cookery, but to us Italians Alfredo is a stranger… Has anybody seen or met him? Please help!
This is a false statement: Italian cooking does not need outrageously expensive seasoning mixes or spices, and our salads are usually dressed with extra virgin olive oil, vinegar and salt: that’s it. We do not buy any Italian seasoning mix, here in Italy!
It’s funny but “Peperoni” in Italian means literary capsicum peppers. If you come to Italy and you want to order a spicy salami pizza, you’d better order a “Pizza al salamino piccante”, if you ask for a Peperoni Pizza, you’ll receive a capsicum peppers pizza..
You can’t get mozzarella stiks in Italy. the only place you can find mozzarella sticks in Italy is McDonalds. Otherwise mozzarella is round.
AAARGHH! Unless you are a 3 years old little one, you’d better not crack or cut spaghetti: it’s socially unacceptable! Spaghetti are a long shaped pasta, if you prefer short shapes, go for them, but please do not crack or cut spaghetti, it’s a shame to every Italian!
Abroad the word Maccaroni means quite every kind of pasta: in Italy Maccheroni is just one of the thousands of shapes, short and holed.
Let’s face it: sometimes Italians use lasagne to get rid of their leftovers: from time to time you’ll find lasagne filled with mozzarella, ham, spinach, hard boiled eggs or any other kind of food scraps. Even in the worse refrigerator raids, the only ingredient an Italian mother would never put inside lasagne is ricotta cheese! Although it’s not a crime, it’s still be a terrible misdemeanor. It turns lasagna into a heavy stodgy meal: causing you the trouble that five or six days later you’ll be hungry again! Ricotta simply does not only work bed with lasagna, it can really irritate the crap out of me.
Ahhh, I knew I was forgetting something!!!! The red and white checkered tablecloth is not so common… I do not know where the stereotype of the red and white tablecloth comes from… probably from Disney’s “The Lady and the tramp”…
I ensure you this tablecloth is not very popular amongst the Italian families. Personally I own brown and white, blue and white and yellow and white checked tablecloths… not red!!!
